What is Honeycomb?

Honeycomb is a personal information management tool designed for knowledge workers. It helps you deal tame the digital chaos at work, combat the fragmented, distributed nature of information, regain control over your time and be more productive.

As a knowledge worker, the volume of information you are exposed to and expected to master expands exponentially and changes rapidly. To do your job well, you need a system for capturing, organizing and managing all the bits of knowledge that contribute to your work. And unlike company-provided tools or shared spaces, your system must be uniquely tailored to your specific areas of responsibility and active projects.

Like the hexagonal compartments of a honeycomb, each project, deliverable or event that you’re working on deserves its own protected space where you can focus on it, while enabling quick navigation to any related or neighboring content.

What’s Included

This Notion template leverages best practices from the personal knowledge management and Getting Things Done (GTD) disciplines to help you stay organized, find the information you need and make the best use of your time. It includes the following sections that you will populate with your own body of work as you use the tool.

✅ Tasks

These are your to-do’s, the things you need to get done from day to day. Tasks often belong to specific Projects, but that won’t always be the case.

Honeycomb helps you organize and prioritize your tasks by constructing a weekly plan and improves focus by hiding deferred tasks until later when you’re ready to think about them.

📔 Notes

Notes in Honeycomb are automatically associated with the context where you create them, so you can easily locate those notes from that customer meeting you had last month. Create notes in the moment or jot down your thoughts and questions ahead of time so you’re the most prepared person in the room.

🛠️ Projects

Projects are the main unit of work in most organizations. But they are not always recognized as such. If you find you are creating more than 2 or 3 tasks related to the same thing, that’s a hint that you may benefit from declaring it as a project in this tool. A project can be a anything meaningful you intend to start and finish in a reasonable amount of time.

Examples of projects you might organize with Honeycomb include:

  • Your work as part of a new product launch
  • A feature you’re designing
  • A business conference you plan to attend

Knowledge workers typically juggle a dozen or more projects at a time, each with its own stakeholders, deadlines, meetings, shared folders, Slack channels or e-mail distribution lists. Honeycomb helps you gather and organize all the relevant information about each of your project on one page.

🔗 Links

Work is highly distributed, and information is frequently delivered to you as a link: to a document, a presentation, a spreadsheet, a Slack channel or a video. Finding the right link days or weeks after you’ve received it requires super-human ability to remember which channel you received it on. Was it a chat message? Direct message or channel? In an email? On a digital whiteboard?

Honeycomb gives you a place to store all the links relevant to a Project or Area so they are always easy to find, without cluttering your browser bookmarks.

 🌐 Areas

Areas are meaningful aspects of your role that are persistent and important. Projects belong to Areas, and a knowledge worker in an individual contributor role typically has 3-5 areas of responsibility. As you grow in your career, you inevitably take on more areas of responsibility: a manager, director or VP might have 5-10 or even more. Honeycomb starts with the following example areas that are normal parts of most jobs:

  • Administration
  • Learning and Development
  • Management

 🎯 Goals

Without a clear set of goals and defined outcomes you are pursuing, it’s hard to know which projects and tasks to prioritize. Goals in Honeycomb help you focus on what’s most important, and are key to your success.

Honeycomb includes a space for documenting your goals and connecting them back to your projects and weekly task list.

  🏷️ Tags

Honeycomb includes a global organizing feature that lets you mark and filter any of your content—notes, tasks, projects, goals—with a custom label that means something to you. Simply view the tag to see everything that was marked with that label.

🎗️ Reminders

It’s useful to be reminded of important recurring milestones, co-worker birthdays, or other little things that might otherwise be neglected. Honeycomb lets you schedule reminders to appear on your daily dashboard so you never miss a beat.
